The Organizational Culture Inventory® (OCI) is a diagnostic tool developed by Human Synergistics International to assess and measure the culture within organizations. It provides valuable insights into the prevailing culture, norms, and behaviors within an organization, and helps leaders and teams understand the impact of the culture on various aspects of organizational performance.
The OCI focuses on three fundamental dimensions of organizational culture:
- Constructive Styles: This dimension represents behaviors and norms that foster a positive and constructive work environment. It includes styles such as Achievement, Self-Actualizing, Humanistic-Encouraging, and Affiliative. These are measures of satisfaction.
- Passive/Defensive Styles: This dimension reflects behaviors and norms that inhibit performance and collaboration. It includes styles such as Approval, Conventional, Dependent, and Avoidance. These are measures of security.
- Aggressive/Defensive Styles: This dimension represents behaviors and norms that are competitive, controlling, and often lead to conflict. It includes styles such as Oppositional, Power, Competitive, and Perfectionistic. These are measures of security.
By assessing the cultural norms within an organization, the OCI helps leaders and teams understand the strengths and weaknesses of their culture. It provides insights into how the current culture may impact employee satisfaction, teamwork, decision-making, communication, and overall organizational effectiveness. This understanding allows organizations to target areas for improvement. It helps to develop strategies for cultural change, and create a more positive and productive work environment. Karl Perry uses the OCI is for organizational development, culture change initiatives, and leadership development programs.
